The 2018 MLS season is off and running with NYC FC and Sporting KC sitting atop the league’s standings. But while the play on the field has been marvelous, many pundits have their eyes off the field as the league continues to ponder further expansion. The MLS is looking to add a few new teams to the league due to its rising popularity. Here’s a look at some of the top fan bases the league currently has to offer.
This Pacific Northwest city has always had a reputation as one of the best sports towns in America. The NFL’s Seattle Seahawks frequently reference the “12th man” aka their fans. The city is likely to land an expansion NHL team soon as well. So it only makes sense that this community is crazy about their MLS team. The Sounders are already making noise league-wide in just their fourth year of existence. After falling just short of a title in 2017, can the Sounders provide the MLS’ best fan base with a championship this season?
Not only does this club play in one of the biggest markets in the league, it also has one of the most passionate and loyal fan bases. Toronto is the league’s best team by far, with studs like Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco on its roster. As mentioned above, FC won the title last season and is looking to defend its crown in 2018. The team will do so in front of a fiercely loyal group of soccer fans.
Historically, this large city has had trouble supporting its teams. The MLB’s Atlanta Braves struggled to attract fans, even while the team was in the midst of a dominant run. But so far in United’s young history, the fan base has been one of the best in the MLS. These fans set a league attendance record last season and possesses one of the league’s best players on its roster. The league can only hope the team continues to improve and draws record crowds for years to come.
