MLS Preseason Gets Underway In Tucson

The MLS Preseason officially kicked off as teams gathered in Tucson, Arizona on February 3rd. Soccer fans are more than welcome to view the several scrimmages taking place at the Kino Sports Complex. It is the seventh straight preseason to be hosted in Tucson, and features nearly half of the MLS’ 23 teams.

MLS Preseason Schedule

Several teams head into the preseason with championship aspirations in the coming year. The Seattle Sounders lost the MLS Cup to Toronto FC, and enter Tucson with the idea of getting over the hump next December. The Portland Timbers, New York Red Bulls, and Sporting Kansas City also took part in the MLS Cup Playoffs last season. Preseason matches got underway over the weekend, and will pick back up in two weeks with Portland facing FC Dallas. The event concludes with the Mobile Mini Sun Cup, which is open to fans for the price of $20 per ticket. Houston Dynamo is the preseason defending champion, hoping to repeat that feat and build on a strong 13-11-10 finish last season.

Teams in attendance: Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders, San Jose Earthquakes, Real Salt Lake, New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers, New England Revolution, LA Galaxy, Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas, and Colorado Rapids.

Preseason Comes To Tucson

The MLS first came to Arizona back in 2011, but Tucson wasn’t initially the host city. The league decided to hold preseason training and matchups in various areas in the valley, including Phoenix and Tempe. The 2011 preseason was a memorable one as David Beckham played one of his final seasons in the MLS with the Galaxy. Last year, the league expanded its preseason action as teams gathered in Portland, Charleston, and Tampa Bay in addition to Tucson. The MLS plans to keep expanding its preseason across the nation as the sport continues to gain popularity in the United States.
