The NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Committee released the official championship bracket on Monday. Three of the top-four seeds are traditional soccer powerhouses in Indiana, North Carolina, and Louisville. Wake Forest was awarded the tournament’s number one seed, adding yet another cherry on top of a dream season so far for the Demon Deacons.
Wake Forest #1 Seed
Last year’s national runner-up continued its domination this season with a 17-1-2 record overall. The team has not lost a game since September 5th. That 2-1 OT loss to Georgia State inspired a 12-0 run for the Demon Deacons. The remarkable win streak ultimately culminated in an Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Can Wake Forest win its first national title since the 2007 squad took home the trophy? Their road to another title will begin later this week against either William & Mary or Columbia.
Championship Bracket Breakdown
The soccer bracket is a bit different from the NCAA’s basketball bracket. Contrary to ‘March Madness,’ the soccer bracket only features a 48-team field. It is made up of 24 conference champions, while the rest of the field contains teams that have received at-large bids. All 16 top seeds receive a first-round bye before their opponents are determined.
Many eyes will be on the 9th ranked Stanford Cardinals, returning to the tournament after winning it all last season. They’ll face either Pacific or CSU Fullerton, two of the more experienced squads in action. A total of four teams will be making their debuts in the tournament – Omaha, Presbyterian, Central Arkansas, and Lipscomb. The Men’s College Cup will take place on December 8th and 10th at Talent Energy Stadium in Philadelphia.
Here are all the ranked teams (16) in the championship bracket:
- Wake Forest
- North Carolina
- Michigan State
- Western Michigan
- Notre Dame
